Feature Article: Hidden energy costs revealed with technology

EnergyPrint_A&DIn 2008, Priscilla Koeckeritz and Jerry Larson saw their opportunity to become data champions of the utility and commercial real estate industry. They had an idea that would allow building owners to quickly determine their energy costs, plus see where specific improvements could be made — based on comparisons to similar buildings. Ackmann & Dickenson built a custom software solution for EnergyPrint so property owners could see their true utility cost, plus see where specific improvements could be made — based on comparisons to similar buildings.

An abundance of data was not the issue. The problem was compiling that data, which was scattered and buried through disparate utility systems that were based on paper. A data analyst was needed to assess energy consumption of just one building, and it was nearly impossible to compare energy costs with other buildings.

Koeckeritz started a conversation with then fledgling application development firm Ackmann & Dickenson (A&D).

“The project was exciting from the get-go,” says Mike Ackmann, co-founder of A&D. “The challenge was to connect the data — which was spread across the country — and then build software that created day-to-day, real-time value for commercial building owners.”
